Postdoctoral Fellowships

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai

Sanjay Moudgalya at the Department of Theoretical Physics (DTP), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, invites applications for two Postdoctoral Fellowships within the Simons Targeted Research Group on the Non-Equilibrium Frontier. The Fellowships will support outstanding early-career scientists pursuing research in theoretical condensed matter physics and theoretical quantum information science.

The Non-Equilibrium Frontier studies quantum matter driven far from equilibrium. The collaboration's work spans the mathematical foundations of quantum dynamics, the classification of intrinsically dynamical phases of matter, the characterization of fault-tolerant quantum computation as a non-equilibrium phase, and the nature of complexity in evolving quantum systems.

Fellows will be free to pursue their own research directions across the landscape of non-equilibrium quantum matter, broadly defined. These are research positions with no teaching or other duties. Fellows will be full members of the Research Group and will be encouraged to work with any of its groups (see the collaboration team) and to spend extended periods visiting other collaboration members. They will benefit from the collaboration's regular meetings, schools, and visitor exchanges, which connect the participating institutions into a single research programme. Cross-institutional collaboration is actively encouraged. In addition, Fellows will also have the opportunity to spend time at other TIFR centres in India, including the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bengaluru, which regularly hosts international workshops and schools.

Terms

Fellows will be based in Mumbai, and the appointments come with a competitive salary and housing allowances, in addition to generous funding for research expenses. Moreover, they will be encouraged to spend many months at a time at other nodes of the collaboration using dedicated funds allotted for that purpose. The start date is negotiable and may be as early as beginning 2027.

Eligibility

Applicants should have a strong track record of research excellence and should have, or be approaching completion of, a PhD in physics or a related field.

To Apply

Please email the following materials to [email protected]:

  • CV, including a list of publications and the names of three referees
  • Cover letter
  • Statement of research interests

Following an initial review of applications, shortlisted candidates will be asked to arrange for confidential letters of recommendation from the three referees listed in their application. Details will be provided at that stage.

Applications will be considered as they arrive until the positions are filled. For full consideration, all materials should be received by December 1, 2026.

The Non-Equilibrium Frontier is committed to building a research community that reflects the full breadth of the field, and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds. TIFR is an equal-opportunity employer.
