Stony Brook University — C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics
Nathanan Tantivasadakarn at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), Stony Brook University, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship within the Simons Targeted Research Group on the Non-Equilibrium Frontier. The Fellowship will support an outstanding early-career scientist pursuing research in theoretical condensed matter and theoretical quantum information science.
The Non-Equilibrium Frontier studies quantum matter driven far from equilibrium. The collaboration's work spans the mathematical foundations of quantum dynamics, the classification of intrinsically dynamical phases of matter, the characterization of fault-tolerant quantum computation as a non-equilibrium phase, and the nature of complexity in evolving quantum systems.
Research directions include but are not limited to topological phases of matter and their realizations on quantum devices, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation, non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, and generalized symmetries. The appointment is a research position with no teaching or other duties.
The Fellow will be a full member of the Research Group and is encouraged to work with any of its groups, including affiliated members (see the collaboration team). They will benefit from the collaboration's regular meetings, schools, and visitor exchanges, which connect the participating institutions into a single research programme. Cross-institutional collaboration is actively encouraged. The YITP has a tradition of collaboration with the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and of Mathematics and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook and with Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The appointment is for two years, renewable for a third year. The approximate start date is September 1, 2027.
Applicants should have completed, or be approaching completion of, all requirements for a doctoral degree in theoretical physics or a closely related field, with a record of independent research.
This position is part of a broader YITP postdoctoral search. Please submit the following materials through Academic Jobs Online:

Review of applications will begin November 16, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
The Non-Equilibrium Frontier is committed to building a research community that reflects the full breadth of the field, and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Stony Brook University is committed to excellence in diversity and the creation of an inclusive learning and working environment. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status and all other protected classes under federal or state laws.
